Sonya Talamantes

 Sometimes people plan what they want to do for a living, for me it happened naturally. Sounds cliché but I was born in a small town in Las Cruces, NM (New Mexico) where deep down I knew one day I'd outgrow it. In high School, during my last 2 years, I became involved with the Schools Theater and Broadcasting programs which I really started to like. With this newly developed interest I decided to major in Theater at UNM (University of NM). This is where I fell in love with the ARTS in many forms. I became highly involved in the costume department where I studied fashion history and created many garments/costumes for Plays. I did a summer internship at a Regional Theater in Florida where I worked with Marilyn Wall-Asse (Emmy winner for costuming). Doing so, I was the only one in the department who began to create the hair/makeup designs for the actors, which was vital to the character.

I finished my college career and obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Theater. Since I couldn't get a degree in makeup I decided to attend a 3 month professional Cinema Makeup School in Hollywood called Joe Blasco to learn beauty and special FX makeup. Thereafter, I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do next. Did I get a job in theater or pursue makeup? Well, I needed a job ASAP so I pursued makeup artistry for various cosmetic companies and worked in counter cosmetics. During this I stumbled upon a job listing to work in a salon as a MUA and receptionist. What I didn't know, was that this would fully submerge me into the beauty industry! I dabbled in hair but while in the salon atmosphere I loved how much hair could be creative. This is where I became an apprentice to do hair and become a licensed cosmetologist.

Brings us today, fast forward over 12 years now in the Hair Industry where I do styling, cutting and coloring and makeup with over 15 years’ experience. What's amazing about my journey Is that I have found a way to merge all my passions, creativity and Art into the beauty industry. Now, with countless hours and hard work, I work in a salon making people feel and look their best and work for various projects for NYFW, Fashion shows, hair shows, photo-shoots and production! Feeling really blessed to find my calling.
